Celeste and I were sleeping in our tent deep in the jungles in the Mara by the Tanzania
border. Since guns were outlawed, I kept a Masaai spear, buck knife, bear spray and a flare
gun next to my sleeping bag in case a lion or leopard came. Two Masaai warriors were standing
guard outside. At 2 a.m. we heard a dog barking. A big leopard had come within a yard of one
our tents. They are man eaters and even more aggressive than lions. Not knowing what would
happen next, I put my hand on the spear, not willing for us to go down without a fight. This
is Africa. Anything can happen at any time.”
